NKY Makerspace is located in Erlanger, KY, inside the Ignite Institute. NKY Makerspace is a regional program serving K-12 students through field trips, workshops and internships. It was made possible through a partnership between Leadership NKY Class of 2015 and Boone County Schools. Through generous support from our sponsors, Kentucky's first kid-focused Makerspace has come to life and is open for field trips, after-school events, super Saturdays and summer camps.
NKY Makerspace was a dream of two Boone County Schools robotics teams - the Jr Brainy Bots and the Brainy Bots, but it was only through the dedication and work of LNK 2015 that the dream was realized. Special thanks to the project co-chairs, Larry Luebbers and Claire Parsons for their commitment and dedication. To create a diverse and collaborative environment for the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs to think, create and build.
To provide the community of Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati the opportunity to learn through creation in a dedicated ‘Makerspace’.
A Makerspace is an open community where individuals come together to share resources in a space that fosters creative exploration for the benefit of art, science and culture.
They are places where people can experiment with everything from 3D printers to a hammer and nails under the philosophy that everyone can learn by having fun. Makerspaces have sprung up across the nation in recent years, and now Boone County Schools has provided a facility to create Kentucky’s first K-12 Makerspace facility open to students and families from across the region. Our charge is to fill that space with equipment and materials that inspire children to dream, think and create. Activities focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) education. Students think beyond a test or a grade – they think for themselves and create new things. We hope to create a model that can be replicated throughout the region. Over the next several years, 80% of the fastest growing occupations in the United States depend on employees skilled in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math (STEAM). To maintain our global competitiveness and leadership in these fields, our students must become proficient in STEAM concepts, and more importantly, they must want to learn more.
