Overview
NGSS Alignment
2-LS2-2: Develop a simple model that mimics the function of an animal in dispersing seeds or pollinating plants.

Learning Targets
  • Build a model that mimics the function of an animal in dispersing seeds or pollinating plants.
  • Discover how flowers depend on pollinators to make seeds

Pollen Painting Activities
  • Watch a video and learn about pollen and how pollinators are used to make seeds.
  • Complete a vocabulary worksheet.
  • Craft a model bee that will be used like a paint brush to spread color from Kool-Aid powder onto a provided painting handout. The Kool-Aid powder will act like pollen so the students can see how bees and other pollinators transfer pollen from different flowers to make seeds.

Scheduling Information
The Pollen Painting field trip is led by the NKY Makerspace student interns.  The cost of this Remote Field Trip is $15 per classroom.  Materials for the field trip are individually packed for each student.  The only things we ask teachers to provide is scissors and 2 tablespoons of water for each student.  This field trip can be done with students virtually from their homes or can be done in the classroom with the NKY Makerspace instructor joining the classroom via a virtual platform.  Remote Field Trip experiences are only available to educators in the NKY/Cincinnati region.
