Learning Targets
Magnet Racing Activities
- 3-PS2-3: Ask questions to determine cause and effect relationships of electric or magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.
- 3-PS2-4: Define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.
- 3-5-ETS1-1: Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
- 3-5-ETS1-3: Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
Learning Targets
- I can design and build a vehicle with limited materials that travels on 4 wheels.
- I can observe the invisible forces that enable a magnet to push or pull an object.
- I can use magnetic interactions to propel the movement of a vehicle.
- I can plan and carry out tests in which variables are controlled to identify aspects of a model that can be improved.
Magnet Racing Activities
- Explore magnetism concepts like magnetic field, magnetic pole, attract & repel.
- Complete a worksheet on attract and repel.
- Engineer a magnetic car made from a foam block, toothpicks, Life Savers and marshmallows.
- Use a magnet wand to steer the car and complete challenges.
Scheduling Information
The Magnet Racing field trip is led by the NKY Makerspace student interns. The cost of this Remote Field Trip is $15 per classroom. All materials for the field trip are individually packed for each student. This field trip can be done with students virtually from their homes or can be done in the classroom with the NKY Makerspace instructor joining the classroom via a virtual platform. Remote Field Trip experiences are only available to educators in the NKY/Cincinnati region.
