Learning Targets
Animal Forensics Activities
- 5-PS1-3 Make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties
- 5-PS3-1 Use models to describe that energy in animals’ food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.
- 5-LS2-1 Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
- 3-5-ETS1-3 Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
Learning Targets
- I can read and use trophic pyramids to identify types of animal consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores) to create a model to solve a mystery related to the food web.
- I can observe and measure prints to identify animals.
- I can separate and compare colors to identify an ink source.
- I can generate and compare suspect information to solve the food web related mystery.
Animal Forensics Activities
- Learn about Forensic Scientists and related careers.
- Examine animal character cards and eliminate suspects based on their position on the trophic pyramid.
- Reveal and compare animal tracks found at the scene.
- Study a note left at the scene and determine which animal wrote the note using color chromatography.
Scheduling Information
The Animal Forensics field trip is led by the NKY Makerspace student interns. The cost of this Remote Field Trip is $15 per classroom and includes all the materials needed for the activities. Students will work in groups of 5 or less and because of the collaborative nature of the activities, this field trip can only be done in an in-person classroom setting.
