Overview
NGSS Alignment
  • 4-PS3-2 Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.
  • 4-PS3-4 Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.
  • 3-5-ETS1-1 Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
  • 3-5 ETS1-3 Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

Learning Targets
  • I can observe how a motor operates when an electric circuit is closed.
  • I can design and construct a bristle bot with a motor that vibrates enabling the bristle bot to move around a space.
  • I can create an arena to contain the bristle bot using limited time and provided materials.
  • I can test the design of my arena to see how I can improve it to best enable the bristle bot to move around the space.

Bristle Bot Activities
  • Explore circuitry concepts like electrical current, series circuits, parallel circuit, and open & closed circuits.
  • Complete a vocabulary worksheet
  • Assemble a small robot (Bristle Bot) using a toothbrush head, vibrating motor and battery.
  • Engineer an arena for the bristle bot using straws and pipe cleaners.

Scheduling Information
The Bristle Bots field trip is led by the NKY Makerspace student interns.  The cost of this Remote Field Trip is $15 per classroom.  All materials for the field trip are individually packed for each student. This field trip can be done with students virtually from their homes or can be done in the classroom with the NKY Makerspace instructor joining the classroom via a virtual platform. Remote Field Trip experiences are only available to educators in the NKY/Cincinnati region.
