Service Learning, PBL and Boone County Schools

Boone County School's strategic plan includes a determined investment in service learning and PBL. Through a district-wide partnership with Children Inc. & the Mayerson Service Learning Initiative, the Boone County School District is engaging all students in service learning experiences. Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Twenty three Boone County teachers are leading service learning as liaisons with the Mayerson initiative. PBL is project/ problem/ passion based learning. Our goal is for every student to be engaged in at least one PBL experience each semester. It is an approach in which students actively explore real-world problems and challenges and acquire a deeper knowledge. PBL Pioneer teachers have been trained throughout the district by the Buck Institute. Both service learning and PBL encourage students to solve problems in meaningful ways that are connected to learning.
Service LearningAccording to leading service learning expert Cathryn Berger Kaye, the 8 standards for service learning include:
Exemplary projects...
New Haven Elementary was awarded the prestigious Jefferson Award for a shoes for kids project that has had a profound impact in their community and in the world...
Below are photos from a Burlington Elementary Service Learning Project. They did research by going to the aquarium, zoo, and Thomas More Field Station. They chose an animal in their specific habitat and wrote a paragraph about it to post in the second grade hallway. They also created tri-folds on what the problem is and how they can solve it by educating their parents/guardians.
