Amateur “Ham” Radio in the 21st Century: From Morse Code to FT8

Led by expert, Mark Volstad!

Click to Register for Electronics Workshop!
Students will learn directly from Mark Volstad, an electronics & programming expert with 40 years of experience in the professional and hobby levels!

In this workshop, students will learn how to solder electronic components to a circuit board, and will build a Morse code practice oscillator to take home. They will learn about the amateur radio hobby and how they can obtain their own license and call sign. They will have the opportunity to make radio contacts with other hams around the country.

Amateur Radio is a popular hobby and service that brings people, electronics and communication together. People of all ages use ham radio to talk across town, around the world, and even into space, all without the Internet or cell phones. It can be a lifeline during natural disasters.

More information about Amateur Radio can be found at

Girls in STEM Day!

Led by field experts...

Click to Register for Girls in STEM Day!
Join us for an afternoon of Girls Only learning, led by industry and education professionals!

Girls will be invited to choose from four activities throughout the afternoon. Each girl will have the opportunity to participate in 2 of the 4 activities. Each activity has been carefully selected to promote an area of STEAM, including coding, photography & robotics, and electronics/soldering! Each session will last 90-minutes, as the girls spend some time to learn an in-depth concept in the activities of their choice!

The coding activity will include in-depth knowledge about beginning coding and entering binary code. Participants will learn from expert Jill Mahan, as they work through a beaded keychain project.

Robotics will utilize Lego EV3s, including the ins and outs of building and programming! This session will be led by Pamela Jayne of the Boone County Public Library.
Electronics will include taking apart machines, learning to solder parts while creating doodle bots from used computer pieces. Students will leave with basic knowledge of handheld tools and circuitry. This session will be led by Emily Greene of NKY Makerspace.
Shannon Eggleston of iImagine Photography will teach girls the science behind the lens of the camera as they work through photography and editing skills!

This Girls Day Out is limited, and we encourage you to register as soon as possible! This workshop will be hosted at NKY Makerspace, 3300 Barneys Road, Burlington, KY from 12:30 – 3:30 pm. Participants should plan to arrive by 12:00 for a smooth start to the day!

This workshop is designed for girls entering grades 3- 9. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

3D Design & Print Workshop!

Led by Emily Greene, Expanded Learning Opportunities Coordinator for Boone County Schools

Click to Register for 3D Design & Print Workshop!
Spend the afternoon working with Emily to learn introductory design principles! Students will explore various types of 3D printers, learn the terminology associated with this industry, and receive hands-on experience with designing and printing in 3-dimensions.

This workshop will require metric measurements, the use of computers, and translating designs from 2D into 3D.

Students will also apply an understanding of water density and natural sciences to explore the design and creation of 'moat boats.' Final products will be printed to be picked up on a later date by parents.

*Please note* Although we wish every student could take home a printed product on the same day as the workshop, 3D printing takes an extended amount of time. For this reason, final printed products will be picked up at a later, pre-determined date.

Cost: $10 + fees
Ages: This workshop is for students in grades 4 - 8. This workshop is for beginners, and no experience is required.
